In 2021, the EU roasted coffee market decreased by -1.9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, roasted coffee exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the main exporters of roasted coffee in the European Union, together resulting at approx. 54% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Poland (6.5%) and France (5.9%). The following exporters - Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) - together made up 16% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Spain (with a CAGR of +13.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest roasted coffee supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 64% of total exports.

France, with a CAGR of +15.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 8%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of roasted coffee imported in the European Union expanded remarkably to X tons, surging by 8.5% on the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 26%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted coffee imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, France (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Austria (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the largest importers of roasted coffee, together mixing up 65% of total imports. Slovakia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

In France, roasted coffee imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+1.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+4.1% per year).
