In 2021, the Croatian roasted coffee market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted coffee production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 33%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Croatia
In 2021, overseas shipments of roasted coffee decreased by -15.6% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 80% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
In value terms, roasted coffee exports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 63%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Slovenia (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of roasted coffee exports from Croatia, with a combined 73% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Serbia (with a CAGR of +84.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Slovenia ($X), Serbia ($X) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) were the largest markets for roasted coffee exported from Croatia worldwide, together comprising 69% of total exports. Italy, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
Among the main countries of destination, Italy, with a CAGR of +83.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average roasted coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 8.8% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia
For the fourth year in a row, Croatia recorded growth in overseas purchases of roasted coffee, which increased by 5.7% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +110.7% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 20%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, roasted coffee imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +118.9% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Italy (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of roasted coffee imports to Croatia, together accounting for 78% of total imports. These countries were followed by Greece, Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which together accounted for a further 16%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +288.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X), Slovenia ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest roasted coffee suppliers to Croatia, with a combined 74% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Austria, Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which together accounted for a further 13%.
Greece, with a CAGR of +304.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average roasted coffee import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
