Roasted Coffee Market Size in Germany
The German roasted coffee market shrank slightly to $X in 2021, declining by -3% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 4.5%. Roasted coffee consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Roasted Coffee Production in Germany
In value terms, roasted coffee production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Germany
For the sixth consecutive year, Germany recorded growth in shipments abroad of roasted coffee, which increased by 4.3% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, roasted coffee exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 15%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of roasted coffee exports from Germany, together comprising 36% of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Romania, Denmark, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, the UK and Spain, which together accounted for a further 47%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Denmark (with a CAGR of +25.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for roasted coffee exported from Germany were France ($X), Poland ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 38% share of total exports. Austria, the UK, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Luxembourg and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +22.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average roasted coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 13%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
In 2021, supplies from abroad of roasted coffee increased by 7.4% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, roasted coffee imports rose notably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest roasted coffee supplier to Germany, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, roasted coffee imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy amounted to +11.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-4.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+1.8% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X), France ($X) and Switzerland ($X) appeared to be the largest roasted coffee suppliers to Germany, with a combined 72% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, France, with a CAGR of +47.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average roasted coffee import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 7.5%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
