For the fourth year in a row, the French roasted coffee market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Roasted Coffee Production in France
In value terms, roasted coffee production contracted modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17%. Roasted coffee production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Roasted Coffee Exports
Exports from France
In 2021, the amount of roasted coffee exported from France contracted slightly to X tons, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 171% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, roasted coffee exports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 90%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of roasted coffee exports from France, together comprising 45% of total exports. Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Australia, the UK, Hungary and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +69.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for roasted coffee exported from France were Spain ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 50% share of total exports. Italy, Belgium, Portugal, Greece, Hungary, the UK, the Czech Republic and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.
Hungary, with a CAGR of +78.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average roasted coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, roasted coffee export price increased by +135.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 126% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Roasted Coffee Imports
Imports into France
In 2021, purchases abroad of roasted coffee increased by 22% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 86%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, roasted coffee imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of roasted coffee imports to France, together accounting for 68% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +18.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Switzerland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of roasted coffee to France, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Switzerland totaled +7.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+7.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+16.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average roasted coffee import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -12.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 44% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
