In 2021, the Slovak roasted coffee market increased by 61% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Roasted coffee consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Roasted Coffee Production in Slovakia
In value terms, roasted coffee production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. Roasted coffee production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Slovakia
For the third year in a row, Slovakia recorded decline in shipments abroad of roasted coffee, which decreased by -14.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, roasted coffee exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 41%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Hungary (X tons), Austria (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of roasted coffee exports from Slovakia, together comprising 88% of total exports. Romania, Cyprus and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.7%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Cyprus (with a CAGR of +46.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for roasted coffee exported from Slovakia were Austria ($X), Hungary ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 86% share of total exports. Romania, Cyprus and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
Cyprus, with a CAGR of +44.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average roasted coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Roasted Coffee Imports
Imports into Slovakia
In 2021, overseas purchases of roasted coffee were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, roasted coffee imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest roasted coffee supplier to Slovakia, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, roasted coffee imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), threefold. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+10.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (+18.3% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of roasted coffee to Slovakia, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to -2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+21.3% per year) and Poland (+10.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average roasted coffee import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
