China (3.4M tons) remains the largest strawberry consuming country worldwide, accounting for 35% of total volume. Turkey (691K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 7.2% share.

In value terms, the largest strawberry markets worldwide were China ($9.2B), the United States ($5B) and Japan ($3.4B), with a combined 55% share of the global market. Egypt, South Korea, Mexico, Germany, the UK, Turkey, Russia, Brazil and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

In terms of the main consuming countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +11.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 7.6%. Over the period under review, global production attained the maximum volume in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future. The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by notable growth of the harvested area and a slight expansion in yield figures.

In value terms, strawberry production shrank to $33.4B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +30.2% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 21%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $36.6B, and then dropped in the following year.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of strawberry production was China (3.4M tons), comprising approx. 35% of total volume. Moreover, strawberry production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United States (1.3M tons), threefold. Turkey (728K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.6% share.

In China, strawberry production expanded at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United States (-0.9% per year) and Turkey (+7.5% per year).

Yield

In 2022, the global average strawberry yield amounted to 24 tons per ha, leveling off at the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +54.8% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports By Country

In 2022, the United States (256K tons), distantly followed by Germany (127K tons), Canada (111K tons), France (66K tons), the UK (59K tons) and Russia (50K tons) were the main importers of strawberries, together comprising 65% of total imports. The Netherlands (34K tons), Italy (31K tons), Belgium (27K tons), Poland (25K tons), Mexico (24K tons), Austria (21K tons) and Portugal (16K tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to strawberry imports into the United States stood at +4.9%. At the same time, Poland (+7.1%), Mexico (+7.0%) and the UK (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +7.1% from 2012-2022. Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, the United States ($1.1B) constitutes the largest market for imported strawberries worldwide, comprising 29% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($434M), with a 12% share of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.5% share.

In the United States, strawberry imports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+2.7% per year) and Germany (+2.0% per year).

Import Prices By Country

The average strawberry import price stood at $3,630 per ton in 2022, falling by -2.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 10%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,731 per ton, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($4,437 per ton), while Russia ($1,765 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+6.4%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Strawberries

Global strawberry exports contracted slightly to 1M tons in 2022, approximately equating 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 16%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 1M tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, strawberry exports reduced slightly to $3.4B in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +57.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 22%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $3.5B, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports By Country

Spain (287K tons), Mexico (202K tons) and the United States (147K tons) represented roughly 63% of total exports in 2022. Greece (75K tons) held a 7.4% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (6.1%). Belgium (38K tons), Turkey (37K tons), Egypt (25K tons) and Morocco (22K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Greece (with a CAGR of +10.8%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest strawberry supplying countries worldwide were Spain ($795M), Mexico ($785M) and the United States ($597M), together comprising 64% of global exports.

Mexico, with a CAGR of +13.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average strawberry export price stood at $3,383 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $3,486 per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($4,755 per ton), while Turkey ($844 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+7.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
