Which Country Eats the Most Strawberries in the World?

Global strawberry consumption amounted to 8,477 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +4.7% against the previous year level. Overall, the global strawberry consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +13% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global strawberry consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Strawberries Consumption

With nearly 3,317 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading strawberry consuming country, mixed up 39% of global consumption. The other major consumers were the United States (1,272 thousand tonnes) and Mexico (421 thousand tonnes), with a share of 15% and 5%, respectively. Moreover, strawberry consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by the United States threefold. They were followed by Turkey with a 4% of global consumption share and Egypt with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of strawberry consumption in China stood at +7.4%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (+1.7% per year) and Mexico (+15.8% per year).

The highest levels of strawberry per capita consumption was registered in Turkey (4.74 kg/year), followed by the United States (3.95 kg/year), Mexico (3.31 kg/year), Egypt (3.05 kg/year) and China (2.36 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of strawberry was estimated at 0.79 kg/year in 2015.

In Mexico, per capita strawberry consumption has grown noticably (+14.2% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Mexico per capita consumption reached 4.74 kg/year as compared with 1.15 kg/year in 2007.
