Uncoated Kraft Liner Market Size in Asia

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in the Asian uncoated kraft liner market, when its value decreased by -2.8% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Uncoated Kraft Liner Production in Asia

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 32%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Exports in Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of uncoated kraft liner was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Japan was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 28% of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by India (12%), Saudi Arabia (7.7%), South Korea (6.8%), Vietnam (6.2%), the United Arab Emirates (6.2%), China (6.2%) and Thailand (5.8%).

Japan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the uncoated kraft liner exports, with a CAGR of +30.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+24.9%), India (+23.1%), China (+18.3%) and the United Arab Emirates (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Korea (-5.5%), Saudi Arabia (-7.8%), Thailand (-8.5%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Japan, India, Vietnam, China and the United Arab Emirates increased by +26, +10, +5.4, +4.9 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Japan ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 47% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Japan, with a CAGR of +28.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 31% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia

In 2021, the amount of uncoated kraft liner imported in Asia reduced to X tons, waning by -14.7% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China represented the largest importer of uncoated kraft liner in Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 34% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together comprising a 32% share of total imports. South Korea (X tons), India (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncoated kraft liner imports into China stood at +4.5%. At the same time, Vietnam (+16.3%), Sri Lanka (+7.5%), Bangladesh (+4.4%), India (+4.1%), Malaysia (+1.9%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012-2021. The Philippines experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Korea (-1.0%), Turkey (-2.5%), the United Arab Emirates (-4.6%), Israel (-8.3%) and Saudi Arabia (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+11 p.p.), Vietnam (+2.2 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Israel, Turkey and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -2.4%, -3.9% and -7.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported uncoated kraft liner in Asia, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +4.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+0.1% per year) and the Philippines (+1.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 25% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Israel ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
