Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 77%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Bangladesh (X tons) was the main destination for uncoated kraft liner exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, uncoated kraft liner exports to Bangladesh exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Nigeria (X tons), fourfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bangladesh stood at +36.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+139.5% per year) and China (-21.8% per year).

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) remains the key foreign market for uncoated kraft liner exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Bangladesh stood at +21.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+133.1% per year) and India (-12.6% per year).

In 2021, the average uncoated kraft liner export price amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +3.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +50.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Australia (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of uncoated kraft liner imports to Sri Lanka, with a combined 32% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Sweden, the Netherlands, Russia, Canada, India, Portugal, South Africa, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Austria and Saudi Arabia, which together accounted for a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +36.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average uncoated kraft liner import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 24% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
