The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 113%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) was the main destination for uncoated kraft liner exports from South Korea, with a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, uncoated kraft liner exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bangladesh (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia stood at +5.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (-15.6% per year) and China (+17.0% per year).

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the key foreign market for uncoated kraft liner exports from South Korea, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Malaysia totaled +7.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (-14.9% per year) and China (+16.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average uncoated kraft liner export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 34% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of uncoated kraft liner increased by 16% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of uncoated kraft liner to South Korea, accounting for a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, uncoated kraft liner imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), threefold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States stood at -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+3.5% per year) and Japan (+5.8% per year).

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States totaled -1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+7.5% per year) and Japan (+4.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average uncoated kraft liner import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 21%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Australia ($X per ton) and Sweden ($X per ton), while the price for Japan ($X per ton) and Finland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
