In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the Chinese uncoated kraft liner market, when its value decreased by -6.1% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, saw a prominent expansion. Uncoated kraft liner consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of uncoated kraft liner decreased by -2.5% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after five years of growth. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 611%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 658% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Malaysia (X tons), Australia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main destinations of uncoated kraft liner exports from China, together accounting for 84% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Australia (with a CAGR of +81.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for uncoated kraft liner exports from China, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Malaysia totaled +28.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+74.1% per year) and Vietnam (+27.6% per year).

In 2021, the average uncoated kraft liner export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, uncoated kraft liner export price increased by +82.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports into China

Uncoated kraft liner imports into China fell remarkably to X tons in 2021, which is down by -34.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 65%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main suppliers of uncoated kraft liner imports to China, with a combined 83% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, Finland, Taiwan (Chinese) and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +28.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Australia ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton), while the price for Finland ($X per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
