China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grapefruit production, comprising approx. 50% of total volume. Moreover, grapefruit production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Vietnam (X tons), sixfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.4% share.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), China (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented the largest exporters of grapefruits, together achieving 78% of total exports. The following exporters - the United States (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +17.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), South Africa ($X) and China ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 48% of global exports. These countries were followed by Turkey, Spain, Israel, the United States, Thailand, Hong Kong SAR and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 40%.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +25.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average grapefruit export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 13%. The global export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by China (X tons), Russia (X tons), France (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main importers of grapefruits, together achieving 52% of total imports. Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons), Canada (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Romania (X tons) and the United States (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +35.8%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), China ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 36% of global imports. Germany, Russia, France, Japan, Poland, Canada, Hong Kong SAR, the United States, Romania and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
Among the main importing countries, the United States, with a CAGR of +42.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average grapefruit import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 11%. Global import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
