In 2022, the Asian grapefruit market decreased by -0.1% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In value terms, grapefruit production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 26%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grapefruit production, accounting for 66% of total volume. Moreover, grapefruit production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Vietnam (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China totaled +4.2%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Vietnam (+8.4% per year) and India (+5.3% per year).

In 2022, the average grapefruit yield in Asia contracted to X tons per ha, approximately equating 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 9.8% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of grapefruits were harvested in Asia; therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Grapefruit exports stood at X tons in 2022, approximately reflecting 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 25%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the major exporters of grapefruits in Asia, together committing 64% of total exports. Israel (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Thailand (8%). The following exporters - Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) - together made up 7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +12.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest grapefruit supplying countries in Asia were China ($X), Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X), with a combined 74% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan (Chinese) and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 21%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +25.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price showed modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 19%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of grapefruits decreased by -13.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, grapefruit imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +27.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) was the major importer of grapefruits, achieving 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and South Korea (X tons), together generating a 38% share of total imports. The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the grapefruits imports, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kuwait (+7.0%), South Korea (+4.0%), the United Arab Emirates (+3.3%) and Turkey (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong SAR experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-1.8%), Iraq (-2.4%) and Japan (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+35 p.p.) and South Korea (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Japan (-41.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapefruits in Asia, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +23.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-11.7% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+14.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -3.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%.
