The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Indonesia represented the major exporter of wood charcoal in Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 37% of total exports in 2021. India (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), China (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons). All these countries together held near 54% share of total exports.

Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+37.3%), Vietnam (+35.9%), the Philippines (+29.9%), India (+22.7%) and China (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +37.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Myanmar (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+10 p.p.), Vietnam (+9.8 p.p.), the Philippines (+9.3 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+4.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Indonesia (-2.5 p.p.), China (-3.4 p.p.) and Myanmar (-20 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest wood charcoal supplying countries in Asia were Indonesia ($X), China ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 69% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Lao People's Democratic Republic, India and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 23%.

Among the main exporting countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +43.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 11%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 29%. Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Iraq (with a CAGR of +37.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and China ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 46% of total imports. These countries were followed by Iraq, Bhutan, South Korea, Jordan, Turkey, Israel, Malaysia, Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand and India, which together accounted for a further 34%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +39.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 7.2%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+12.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
