Exports

In 2021, shipments abroad of wood charcoal decreased by -0.3% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 17%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +100.2% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 20%. The global exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons), distantly followed by India (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Poland (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Paraguay (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) represented the major exporters of wood charcoal, together comprising 58% of total exports. The following exporters - Cuba (X tons), China (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) - each accounted for a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood charcoal exports from Indonesia stood at +7.4%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+37.3%), Vietnam (+35.9%), the Philippines (+29.9%), India (+22.7%), Ukraine (+7.8%), Poland (+4.6%), Cuba (+3.7%) and China (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +37.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Argentina (-1.1%), Nigeria (-1.3%), Paraguay (-1.8%) and Myanmar (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+5.9 p.p.), Indonesia (+5.7 p.p.), Vietnam (+5.1 p.p.), the Philippines (+4.6 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+2.5 p.p.) and Ukraine (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of Nigeria (-2.1 p.p.), Paraguay (-2.8 p.p.) and Myanmar (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wood charcoal supplying countries worldwide were Indonesia ($X), China ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 38% of global exports. Vietnam, the Philippines, Ukraine, Paraguay, Lao People's Democratic Republic, India, Nigeria, Cuba, Argentina and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Among the main exporting countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +43.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average wood charcoal export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
