In value terms, non-electric instantaneous or storage water heaters ($126.4B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by household washing and drying machines ($49.5B). It was followed by household refrigerators and freezers (not combined).

World Imports of Domestic Appliances

After seven years of growth, overseas purchases of domestic appliances decreased by -4.9% to 4B units in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 4.2B units, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, domestic appliances imports shrank modestly to $161.7B in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +54.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $168.3B, and then declined in the following year.

Imports By Country

The United States was the largest importing country with an import of about 910M units, which reached 23% of total imports. Germany (256M units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 6.4% share, followed by Russia (5.2%) and the Netherlands (5.2%). France (150M units), the UK (145M units), Canada (128M units), Italy (103M units), Japan (101M units), India (96M units), Spain (92M units), Thailand (89M units) and the United Arab Emirates (83M units) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Netherlands (+14.2%), India (+7.8%), Spain (+6.3%), Germany (+6.2%), the United Arab Emirates (+5.1%), Russia (+4.6%), Italy (+4.0%), France (+3.7%), Thailand (+3.5%) and Canada (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +14.2% from 2012-2022. The UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Japan (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Domestic electric coffee or tea makers (167M units), electric hair dryers (140M units), electric water heaters and immersion heaters (124M units), domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances (116M units), electric smoothing irons (109M units), microwave ovens (73M units), household washing and drying machines (65M units), domestic electric toasters (63M units) and iron or steel gas domestic appliances (58M units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +78.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 4.8B units in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, domestic appliances exports shrank to $155.1B in 2022. In general, total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +51.0% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 21%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $165.3B, and then reduced in the following year.

China dominates exports structure, reaching 2.9B units, which was near 66% of total exports in 2022. The Netherlands (173M units), Germany (135M units), Mexico (103M units), Italy (95M units) and Poland (88M units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
