Which Country Exports the Most Refrigerators and Freezers in the World?

In 2016, the amount of refrigerator exported worldwide totaled 6.6M tonnes, moving up by 15% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed over the period under review. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, an increase of 24% year-to-year. Global refrigerator export peaked in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, refrigerator exports totaled $40B in 2016. In general, refrigerator exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global refrigerator exports attained its maximum level of $43B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Refrigerator Exports By Country

In 2016, China (1.7M tonnes), distantly followed by Mexico (999K tonnes), Thailand (455K tonnes), Turkey (451K tonnes), South Korea (345K tonnes), the U.S. (332K tonnes), and Italy (302K tonnes) represented the largest exporters of refrigerator, together committing 69% of total exports. Poland (231K tonnes), Germany (208K tonnes), Hungary (127K tonnes), France (114K tonnes), and Romania (112K tonnes) occupied the mild share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of refrigerator exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Romania (+8.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest refrigerator markets worldwide were China ($7.9B), Mexico ($4.7B) and Italy ($3B), together comprising 39% of global exports.

Mexico (+7.8% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the refrigerator exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Refrigerator Export Prices By Country

The average refrigerator export price stood at $6,046 per tonne in 2016, waning by -12.6% against the previous year. In general, refrigerator export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when export price increased by 10% from the previous year level. In that year, average refrigerator export price reached its maximum level of $7,169 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average refrigerator export price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was France ($12 per kg), while Hungary ($3,507 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of refrigerator export prices was attained by South Korea (+3.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
