Domestic Appliances Market Size in China
The Chinese domestic appliances market fell to $X in 2021, waning by -14.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Domestic Appliances Production in China
In value terms, domestic appliances production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Domestic Appliances Exports
Exports from China
In 2021, shipments abroad of domestic appliances increased by 11% to X units, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +89.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 25%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, domestic appliances exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +89.4% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The United States (X units) was the main destination for domestic appliances exports from China, accounting for a 24% share of total exports. Moreover, domestic appliances exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X units), fivefold. Japan (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States amounted to +5.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+7.5% per year) and Japan (-1.6% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for domestic appliances exports from China, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States totaled +9.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+2.7% per year) and Germany (+9.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average domestic appliances export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to India ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Domestic Appliances Imports
Imports into China
In 2021, purchases abroad of domestic appliances decreased by -2.4% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -10.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, domestic appliances imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Japan (X units), Poland (X units) and South Korea (X units) were the main suppliers of domestic appliances imports to China, with a combined 43% share of total imports. Vietnam, Germany, Malaysia, Switzerland, Austria, France, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 45%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +58.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of domestic appliances to China, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Malaysia amounted to +92.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+11.7% per year) and Japan (+6.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average domestic appliances import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, domestic appliances import price increased by +78.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while the price for Austria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+22.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
