In value terms, uncoated kraft liner exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the largest exporters of uncoated kraft liner in MENA, together creating 69% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Israel (X tons) and Turkey (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 27% share of total exports. Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +53.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, rising by 26% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Turkey ($X per ton) and Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Israel ($X per ton) and Kuwait ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+15.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Uncoated kraft liner imports reduced to X tons in 2021, waning by -7% on 2020. Overall, imports saw a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the largest importer of uncoated kraft liner, committing 45% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (10%), Morocco (8.1%), the United Arab Emirates (7.7%) and Israel (6.2%). Kuwait (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncoated kraft liner imports into Turkey stood at -2.5%. At the same time, Kuwait (+17.9%), Morocco (+10.7%) and Egypt (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +17.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-4.6%), Israel (-8.3%) and Saudi Arabia (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+7.2 p.p.), Morocco (+5.9 p.p.), Egypt (+4.7 p.p.) and Kuwait (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Israel and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -2.9% and -13% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported uncoated kraft liner in MENA, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+1.0% per year) and Morocco (+12.1% per year).

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 26% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%.
