Soya Bean Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average soya bean import price amounted to $708 per ton, jumping by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $971 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($975 per ton), while the price for the United States ($380 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Soya Bean Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023

In September 2023, the average soya bean export price amounted to $557 per ton, growing by 4.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 an increase of 8.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $668 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Malaysia ($608 per ton) and Mozambique ($606 per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($547 per ton) and Bangladesh ($550 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Soya Bean Imports in South Africa

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of soya beans, when their volume decreased by -93.1% to 4.7K tons. Overall, imports showed a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 180%.

In value terms, soya bean imports declined remarkably to $3.3M in 2022. In general, imports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 419%.
