The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -6.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Egypt (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) represented the key exporters of wood charcoal in 2021, reaching approx. 39% and 34% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), committing an 11% share of total exports. Palestine (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Turkey (with a CAGR of +84.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Egypt ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 83% share of total exports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +81.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 39% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 63% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Djibouti (+14.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, overseas purchases of wood charcoal decreased by -2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after eight years of growth. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -12.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood charcoal imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 36% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Iraq (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Israel (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons), together mixing up a 48% share of total imports.

Imports into Saudi Arabia increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iraq (+37.4%), Jordan (+13.2%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.8%) and Israel (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +37.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lebanon (-1.6%) and Turkey (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Jordan increased by +9.3, +5.7 and +4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood charcoal in MENA, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iraq ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 9.4% share.

In Saudi Arabia, wood charcoal imports increased at an average annual rate of +22.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iraq (+39.7% per year) and Jordan (+17.7% per year).
