Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe

Unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports reduced to X tons in 2021, which is down by -7.6% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 104%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Belgium (X tons) was the main exporter of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons, making up 73% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Spain (5.2%). France (X tons) and Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons. At the same time, the Netherlands (+25.7%), Russia (+15.1%), France (+8.7%) and Spain (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +25.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of the Netherlands (+13 p.p.), Belgium (+3 p.p.), Spain (+1.8 p.p.) and Russia (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons supplier in Europe, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.8% share.

In Belgium, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+34.7% per year) and Spain (+0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild downturn. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, overseas purchases of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons increased by 5.4% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +43.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 23%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belgium (X tons) represented the major importer of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons, creating 36% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the UK (X tons), together comprising a 54% share of total imports. Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports into Belgium stood at +2.2%. At the same time, Spain (+17.5%), the Netherlands (+3.9%) and the UK (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-2.0%), Italy (-2.9%) and Germany (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+6 p.p.), the Netherlands (+3.6 p.p.) and Belgium (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Italy, Germany and France saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -4.2% and -5.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 64% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Spain, the UK and Italy, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +10.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
