In 2021, overseas shipments of uncoated kraft liner increased by 5.4% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Sweden represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 32% of total exports. Russia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Finland (X tons), Poland (X tons), Austria (X tons), France (X tons) and Portugal (X tons). All these countries together held near 53% share of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncoated kraft liner exports from Sweden stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Finland (+21.7%), Russia (+9.9%), the Netherlands (+4.9%), France (+3.3%) and Poland (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012-2021. Austria and Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Finland (+8.8 p.p.) and Russia (+5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Portugal, Austria, Poland and Sweden saw its share reduced by -2%, -2%, -2.5% and -6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest uncoated kraft liner supplier in Europe, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden totaled +2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Finland (+21.2% per year) and Russia (+12.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
