Pumpkin Price in Portugal (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average pumpkin export price amounted to $854 per ton, picking up by 4.4% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated modest growth from October 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the last eleven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, pumpkin export price decreased by -33.0% against June 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 20% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,276 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($1,076 per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($590 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In September 2023, the average pumpkin import price amounted to $582 per ton, dropping by -12.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2023 an increase of 51% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $1,065 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($588 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands totaled $549 per ton.
From October 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+14.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Pumpkin Exports in Portugal
In 2022, shipments abroad of pumpkin (squash and gourds) increased by 0.9% to 41K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease.
In value terms, pumpkin exports rose rapidly to $28M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 22K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pumpkin imports stood at $12M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $14M.
