Which Country Eats the Most Artichokes in the World?

Global artichoke consumption amounted to 1,637 thousand tonnes in 2015, ascending by +4.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global artichoke consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained consistant, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +6% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global artichoke consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Artichokes Consumption

With nearly 511 thousand tonnes, Italy became the world’s leading artichoke consuming country, mixed up 33% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Spain (249 thousand tonnes) and Egypt (198 thousand tonnes), with a share of 16% and 13%, respectively. Moreover, artichoke consumption in Italy surpassed the figures recorded by Spain twofold. They were followed by Argentina with a 7% of global consumption share and Algeria with a 6% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of artichoke consumption in Italy stood at +0.9%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Spain (+1.2% per year) and Egypt (+1.7% per year).

Per capita artichoke in Italy was estimated at 8.55 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 1.07 kg/year. Italy was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of artichoke, followed by Spain (5.39 kg/year), Algeria (2.53 kg/year), Argentina (2.40 kg/year) and Egypt (2.16 kg/year).

In Algeria, per capita artichoke consumption has grown noticably (+18.1% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Algeria per capita consumption reached 8.55 kg/year as compared with 0.67 kg/year in 2007.
