The Global Spinach Market Hit a Record $39.6B and Continues Up
IndexBox has just published a new report: 'World - Spinach - Market Analysis, Forecast, Size, Trends and Insights'. Here is a summary of the report's key findings.
Despite the pandemic, the global market for spinach continues to grow thanks to high demand from China. While the Chinese market is supplied domestically, the U.S., the UK and Mexico feature the most rapidly growing imports. Driven by the rising demand for food worldwide, the spinach market is projected to reach 42M tons by 2030. Spinach suppliers to Western countries are facing increasingly stringent requirements of providing produce safe from pesticides and other contaminants. The new potential was discovered to use this plant in the production process for energy-efficient batteries, which may elevate opportunities for investing in the market.
Key Trends and Insights
The global spinach market overcame the negative effects of the pandemic to grow from $37.7B in 2019 to 39.6B in 2020, mainly due to a 5% y-o-y increase in consumption from China. The country consumes 92% of all spinach produced in the world. Domestic production meets almost all of China's demand for spinach, while imports don't cover more than 0.6% of total consumption.
The U.S. remains the largest importer of spinach in the world with shipments totalling $77.1M in 2020. The U.S., the UK and Mexico made the largest gains with over 20% increases in spinach imports for each country in 2020.
Rising demand for healthy produce from the growing global population will continue to be the main driver for the market. Expanding demand for nutritious foods will especially propel the market for organic spinach. IndexBox forecasts that the world will consume 42M tons of spinach by 2030.
According to research performed by the Environmental Working Group, spinach placed second in its top 12 list of produce with elevated levels of pesticide residue. This problem led to unfortunate incidents in the U.S. and the EU, so the ability to provide safe spinach to the market is becoming the key requirement for suppliers to Western countries.
The promising use of the plant as a renewable energy source could additionally drive an expansion of the market. Recent scientific research shows that carbon nanosheets used in metal-air batteries can be derived from spinach. Metal-air batteries are more energy-efficient than lithium-ion ones, while the carbon nanosheets surpass the oxygen reduction reaction activity of traditional platinum catalysts. If the technology can be successfully commercialized, it could increase the market's attractiveness for investors.
Global Spinach Consumption
The global market recorded growth in the consumption of spinach, which increased by 5.4% to 32M tons in 2020. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2020.
The global spinach market value rose significantly to $39.6B in 2020, growing by 5.1% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price).
China (29M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of spinach consumption, comprising approx. 92% of total volume. In value terms, China ($33.4B) also leads the market.
Global Spinach Imports
In 2020, approx. 197K tons of spinach were imported worldwide; with an increase of 5.9% against 2019. In general, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2020: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last eight-year period. The UK (20K tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Germany (16K tons), Belgium (14K tons), Mexico (12K tons) and the Netherlands (11K tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports. The following importers - France (7.7K tons), Singapore (6.2K tons) and Poland (4.1K tons) - together made up 9.1% of total imports.
In value terms, Canada ($113M), the U.S. ($77M) and the UK ($44M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2020, together accounting for 54% of global imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Poland and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 29%.
In 2020, the average spinach import price amounted to $2,193 per ton, picking up by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2020, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%.
