Which Country Consumes the Most Pumpkin in the World?

Global pumpkin consumption amounted to 25,834 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +2.5% against the previous year level. Overall, the global pumpkin consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +3% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global pumpkin consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Pumpkin Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were China (7,417 thousand tonnes), India (5,016 thousand tonnes), Ukraine (1,459 thousand tonnes), together mixed up 54% of total consumption. They were followed by Russia with a 5% of global consumption share and the United States with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of pumpkin consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by Ukraine (+13.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The highest levels of pumpkin (squash and gourds) per capita consumption was registered in Ukraine (32.54 kg/year), followed by Russia (9.05 kg/year), China (5.27 kg/year), India (3.83 kg/year) and the United States (2.57 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of pumpkin (squash and gourds) was estimated at 6.24 kg/year in 2015.

In Ukraine, per capita pumpkin (squash and gourds) consumption has grown noticably (+14.1% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Ukraine per capita consumption reached 32.54 kg/year as compared with 11.35 kg/year in 2007.
