Price for Butter and Dairy Spreads in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average butter and dairy spreads export price amounted to $5,659 per ton, declining by -1.9% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 2.2% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $6,772 per ton. From January 2023 to July 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($9,759 per ton), while the average price for exports to Ireland ($5,077 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Price for Butter and Dairy Spreads in the Netherlands (CIF) - 2023

In July 2023, the average butter and dairy spreads import price amounted to $4,664 per ton, flattening at the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 7.8% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $5,694 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($6,834 per ton), while the price for Germany ($3,380 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Exports of Butter and Dairy Spreads in the Netherlands

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of butter and dairy spreads decreased by -4.3% to 262K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 8%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 274K tons, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, butter and dairy spreads exports surged to $1.6B in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.7% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +58.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports of Butter and Dairy Spreads in the Netherlands

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 171K tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, butter and dairy spreads imports skyrocketed to $857M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
