Which Country Consumes the Most Butter And Ghee in the World?

Global butter and ghee consumption amounted to 10,168 thousand tonnes in 2015, remaining constant against the previous year level. Overall, the global butter and ghee consumption indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +0.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +2% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global butter and ghee consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Butter And Ghee Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were France (93 thousand tonnes), Russia (90 thousand tonnes), China (70 thousand tonnes), together mixed up 392% of total consumption. They were followed by Italy with a 100% of global consumption share and the United Kingdom with a 86% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of butter and ghee consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by China (+31.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

Per capita butter and ghee in France was estimated at 1.45 kg/year, lower than the global average of -0.41 kg/year. France was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of butter and ghee, followed by Italy (1.08 kg/year), the United Kingdom (0.86 kg/year), Russia (0.63 kg/year) and China (0.05 kg/year).

In China, per capita butter and ghee consumption has grown noticably (+30.3% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 1.45 kg/year as compared with 0.01 kg/year in 2007.
