Dairy Produce Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

The average dairy produce export price stood at $1,262 per ton in 2022, picking up by 5.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,321 per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($4,108 per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($647 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Dairy Produce Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average dairy produce import price amounted to $4,100 per ton, rising by 62% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, dairy produce import price increased by +103.5% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($7,875 per ton), while the price for Poland ($548 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+20.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Dairy Produce Exports in South Africa

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of dairy produce decreased by -4.3% to 186K tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 5%.

In value terms, dairy produce exports totaled $234M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Dairy Produce Imports in South Africa

In 2022, the amount of dairy produce imported into South Africa contracted significantly to 34K tons, dropping by -41.3% on the year before. Overall, imports saw a abrupt shrinkage.
