Ghee Market Size in South Africa

For the fourth consecutive year, the South African ghee market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2020. Overall, consumption recorded noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. from 2016 to 2020, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Ghee Production in South Africa

In value terms, ghee production reached $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. In general, production posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. from 2019 to 2020, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Ghee Exports

Exports from South Africa

In 2020, overseas shipments of ghee decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ghee exports dropped to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Namibia (X tonnes), Mozambique (X tonnes) and Botswana (X tonnes) were the main destinations of ghee exports from South Africa, together accounting for X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Zambia, Lesotho and Zimbabwe, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Zambia, while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Namibia ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Zambia ($X) constituted the largest markets for ghee exported from South Africa worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Zambia recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average ghee export price amounted to $X per tonne, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. from 2019 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Zimbabwe ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mozambique, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ghee Imports

Imports into South Africa

For the sixth consecutive year, South Africa recorded decline in purchases abroad of ghee, which decreased by -X% to X tonnes in 2020. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tonnes. from 2015 to 2020, the growth imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, ghee imports reduced slightly to $X in 2020. In general, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, imports decreased by -X% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. from 2015 to 2020, the growth imports failed to regain the momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2020, India (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of ghee to South Africa, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, ghee imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Greece (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+X% per year) and Greece (+X% per year).

In value terms, India ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Greece ($X) appeared to be the largest ghee suppliers to South Africa, with a combined X% share of total imports.

Greece (+X% per year) saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2020, the average ghee import price amounted to $X per tonne, rising by X% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, ghee import price increased by +X% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the U.S. ($X per tonne), while the price for New Zealand ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
