Which Country Eats the Most Watermelons in the World?

Global watermelon consumption amounted to 112,960 thousand tonnes in 2015, picking up by +1.7% against the previous year level. Overall, the global watermelon consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +4% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global watermelon consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Watermelons Consumption

With nearly 77,322 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading watermelon consuming country, making up 68% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Turkey (3,753 thousand tonnes) and Iran (3,653 thousand tonnes), with a share of 3% and 3%, respectively. Moreover, watermelon consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Turkey more than tenfold. They were followed by Brazil with a 2% of global consumption share and Egypt with a 2% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of watermelon consumption in China stood at +2.7%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Turkey (-0.1% per year) and Iran (+1.5% per year).

Per capita watermelon in China was estimated at 54.94 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 8.65 kg/year. China was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of watermelon, followed by Turkey (47.71 kg/year), Iran (46.18 kg/year), Egypt (21.20 kg/year) and Brazil (10.47 kg/year).

In China, per capita watermelon consumption has grown noticably (+2.2% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 54.94 kg/year as compared with 46.21 kg/year in 2007.
