Watermelon Market Size in Turkey

In 2020, the Turkish watermelon market decreased by -X% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, production failed to regain the momentum.

In 2020, the average watermelon yield in Turkey stood at X tonnes per ha, with an increase of X% against 2019. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2020; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009 with an increase of X% y-o-y. The watermelon yield peaked in 2020 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2019, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, watermelon exports reduced notably to $X in 2020. Overall, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at $X in 2019, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Syrian Arab Republic (X tonnes), Poland (X tonnes) and Germany (X tonnes) were the main destinations of watermelon exports from Turkey, together accounting for X% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for watermelon exported from Turkey were Poland ($X), Romania ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Syrian Arab Republic, Russia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, the UK, Austria and Georgia, which together accounted for a further X terms of the main countries of destination, Syrian Arab Republic recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average watermelon export price amounted to $X per tonne, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 an increase of X% year-to-year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Georgia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Turkey

In 2020, supplies from abroad of watermelons decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, watermelon imports shrank notably to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Iran (X tonnes) constituted the largest watermelon supplier to Turkey, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, watermelon imports from Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sudan (X tonnes), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Afghanistan (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Iran totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sudan (+X% per year) and Afghanistan (+X% per year).

In value terms, Iran ($X), Sudan ($X) and Afghanistan ($X) constituted the largest watermelon suppliers to Turkey, with a combined X% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Afghanistan (+X% per year) saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2020, the average watermelon import price amounted to $X per tonne, waning by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. from 2016 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average import prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per tonne), while the price for Iran ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
