Watermelon Market Size in Colombia

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, watermelon exports attained their maximum at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2018, exports failed to regain their momentum.

Exports by Country

Aruba (X tonnes) was the main destination for watermelon exports from Colombia, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, watermelon exports to Aruba exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tonnes), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Cuba (X kg), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Aruba amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-X% per year) and Cuba (-X% per year).

In value terms, Aruba ($X) remains the key foreign market for watermelon exports from Colombia, comprising X% of total watermelon exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the Netherlands ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Cuba, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Aruba amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+X% per year) and Cuba (-X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average watermelon export price stood at $X per tonne in 2018, rising by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price indicated significant growth from 2007 to 2018: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, watermelon export price increased by +X% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices for watermelons attained their maximum in 2018 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, watermelon imports, however, continue to indicate a deep deduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, watermelon imports reached their maximum at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2018, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, watermelon imports totaled $X in 2018. In general, watermelon imports, however, continue to indicate a sharp decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2018, imports failed to regain their momentum.

Imports by Country

Costa Rica (X kg), Nicaragua (X kg) and Venezuela (X kg) were the main suppliers of watermelon imports to Colombia, with a combined X% share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Nicaragua, while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Costa Rica ($X), Nicaragua ($X) and the Dominican Republic ($X) were the largest watermelon suppliers to Colombia, together accounting for X% of total imports.

Nicaragua experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the last eleven-year period, while the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

The average watermelon import price stood at $X per tonne in 2018, lowering by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the watermelon import price continues to indicate an abrupt drop. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 an increase of X% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per tonne), while the price for Venezuela ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
