Watermelon Market Size in Malaysia

Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2018, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, watermelon exports amounted to $X in 2018. Over the period under review, the total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2007 to 2018: its value decreased at an average annual rate of -X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, watermelon exports decreased by -X% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Singapore (X tonnes) was the main destination for watermelon exports from Malaysia, with a X% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the key foreign market for watermelon exports from Malaysia, comprising X% of total watermelon exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by China, Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of value to Singapore amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China, Hong Kong SAR (-X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average watermelon export price stood at $X per tonne in 2018, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2018, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2017, leveling off in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2018, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan, Chinese, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia

Watermelon imports into Malaysia stood at X tonnes in 2018, lowering by -X% against the previous year. In general, watermelon imports continue to indicate a drastic descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. In that year, watermelon imports attained their peak of X tonnes. From 2011 to 2018, the growth of watermelon imports failed to regain its momentum.

In value terms, watermelon imports stood at $X in 2018. Over the period under review, watermelon imports continue to indicate a deep curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2018, imports failed to regain their momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2018, Thailand (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of watermelon to Malaysia, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, watermelon imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Myanmar (X tonnes), ninefold. Australia (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of volume from Thailand totaled -X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Myanmar (+X% per year) and Australia (-X% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Australia ($X) and Japan ($X) were the largest watermelon suppliers to Malaysia, together accounting for X% of total imports. These countries were followed by Myanmar, Pakistan and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further X the main suppliers, Myanmar (+X% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to imports, over the last eleven-year period, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2018, the average watermelon import price amounted to $X per tonne, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the watermelon import price continues to indicate tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of X% y-o-y. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2018, import prices failed to regain their momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per tonne), while the price for Thailand ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
