In 2021, the Europe wood charcoal market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption showed slight growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +9.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +77.7% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Ukraine (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total exports in 2021. Portugal (X tons) held a 6.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (6.6%), the Netherlands (5.8%), Spain (5.3%) and Germany (4.8%). Belgium (X tons), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +22.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Ukraine ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 57% of total exports. Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Latvia and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Portugal, with a CAGR of +21.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The purchases of the twelve major importers of wood charcoal, namely Germany, Poland, the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Romania, Norway and Sweden, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +75.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 34% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Norway, Greece, Sweden, Portugal, Spain and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +67.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 9.7%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
