Wood Charcoal Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the East European wood charcoal market, when its value increased by 34% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 23%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, exports of wood charcoal in Eastern Europe dropped to X tons, waning by -7.7% on 2020 figures. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +4.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports rose to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +22.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 26%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Ukraine (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the key exporters of wood charcoal in 2021, amounting to approx. 41% and 37% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), achieving a 10% share of total exports. Belarus (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Belarus (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wood charcoal supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for 87% of total exports. These countries were followed by Latvia and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 6.5%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +21.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of wood charcoal was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood charcoal imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 39%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) represented the largest importer of wood charcoal, making up 50% of total imports. Romania (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (6.8%), Slovakia (6.2%) and the Czech Republic (4.8%). The following importers - Lithuania (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - each recorded a 6.1% share of total imports.

Imports into Poland increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Romania (+75.2%), Russia (+27.1%), Belarus (+23.9%), Slovakia (+21.6%), Lithuania (+20.0%) and the Czech Republic (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +75.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Romania (+17 p.p.), Russia (+5.2 p.p.), Slovakia (+4.1 p.p.), Belarus (+2.1 p.p.) and Lithuania (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Czech Republic (-2.9 p.p.) and Poland (-25.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood charcoal in Eastern Europe, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 12% share.

In Poland, wood charcoal imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (+67.7% per year) and Russia (+21.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
