Zambia was the key exporter of way-type unit heads for working metal in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2021. Uganda (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Africa (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 25% share of total exports. Tanzania (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Zambia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uganda (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-20.9%) and Tanzania (-27.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Zambia ($X) remains the largest way-type unit head supplier in Africa, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 4.3% share.

In Zambia, way-type unit head exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-20.3% per year) and Tanzania (-20.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -11.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 235% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+11.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of way-type unit heads for working metal decreased by -18.9% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, way-type unit head imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Angola (X tons) represented the main importer of way-type unit heads for working metal in Africa, creating 80% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sudan (with a CAGR of +60.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest way-type unit head importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together accounting for 42% of total imports. The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
