The African glass fibres and wool market shrank to $X in 2022, waning by -7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass fibres and wool exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 118%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Egypt prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the glass fibres and glass wool exports, with a CAGR of +317.6% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+96 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-61.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest glass fibres and wool supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 3.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt amounted to +267.4%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 62%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt amounted to $X per ton.

In 2022, approx. X tons of glass fibres and glass wool were imported in Africa; with an increase of 10% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +22.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +46.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest glass fibres and wool importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 41% share of total imports. South Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Sudan, Uganda, Angola, Djibouti, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Eritrea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

Uganda, with a CAGR of +53.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -4.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 35%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Eritrea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+16.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
