Consumption By Country

China (1.5M tons) remains the largest glass fiber consuming country worldwide, comprising approx. 28% of total volume. Global glass fiber production contracted slightly to 5.1M tons in 2022, remaining stable against the year before. Overall, production continues to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 6.5%. As a result, production attained the peak volume of 6.2M tons. From 2014 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, glass fiber production declined to $15.2B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 12%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $19.1B. From 2017 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of glass fiber production was China (1.8M tons), accounting for 36% of total volume. Moreover, glass fiber production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (524K tons), threefold. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 14%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 2.3M tons, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, glass fiber imports totaled $7.3B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Australia (49K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the largest glass fiber importing markets worldwide were the United States ($777M), Germany ($515M) and France ($500M), with a combined 25% share of global imports. Mexico, Canada, the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, India, Belgium and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Non-woven glass fibre webs, felts, mattresses and boards (889K tons) and glass fibres and glass wool (744K tons) represented the key types of voiles, webs, mats and other articles of glass fibers in 2022, resulting at near 40% and 34% of total imports, respectively. Glass fibre mats (356K tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by glass fibre voiles (227K tons). All these products together took approx. 26% share of total imports.
