Which Country Imports the Most Slivers, Rovings and Chopped Strands in the World?

IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Slate ; Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

Global slate imports amounted to 773K tonnes in 2016, growing by 2% against the previous year figure. Overall, slate imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when imports increased by 29% against the previous year level. Global slate import peaked of 871K tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, slate imports stood at $79M in 2016. In general, slate imports continue to indicate a deep decline. Global slate import peaked of $114M in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Slate Imports By Country

The imports of the three major importers of slate, namely India, France, and China, represented more than half of total import. The UK (58K tonnes) occupied the second position in the ranking, followed by Italy (43K tonnes), and Germany (41K tonnes). All these countries together occupied approx. 18% share of total imports. The following importers ; Belgium (35K tonnes), Czech Republic (28K tonnes), Albania (27K tonnes), Spain (14K tonnes), Belarus (14K tonnes), and Brazil (12K tonnes) together made up 17% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of slate imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Belarus (+73.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India (UNKNOWN), Albania (UNKNOWN) and the UK ($18M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2016, with a combined ;% share of global imports.

India (nan% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the slate imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Slate Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for slate amounted to $102 per tonne, ascending by 4% against the previous year. Overall, slate import price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when import price increased by 20% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, average slate import price attained its maximum level of $154 per tonne in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was the UK ($316 per tonne), while Albania ($0 per kg) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of slate import prices was attained by Brazil (+81.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when import increased by 16% year-to-year. Over the period under review, global sliver and roving imports attained its maximum volume in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, the largest sliver and roving markets worldwide were Germany ($1.2B), China ($822M) and France ($559M), together accounting for 22% of global imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Mexico, Japan, Italy, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, India and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 26%.

India (+9.1% per year) had the highest growth rate of sliver and roving imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2016, the average import price for sliver and roving amounted to $2,432 per tonne, lowering by -1.7% against the previous year. Overall, sliver and roving import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when import price increased by 10% against the previous year level. In that year, average sliver and roving import price reached its maximum level of $2,753 per tonne. From 2012 to 2016, growth of average sliver and roving import price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was China ($4,202 per tonne), while Malaysia ($299 per tonne) was among the lowest.
