Which Country Exports the Most Slivers, Rovings and Chopped Strands in the World?

Global sliver and roving exports amounted to 4.4M tonnes in 2016, jumping by 5% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, an increase of 18% year-to-year. Global sliver and roving export peaked in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sliver and roving exports stood at $11B in 2016. In general, sliver and roving exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global sliver and roving exports attained its maximum level of $12B in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Sliver And Roving Exports By Country

China (1.3M tonnes) was the key exporter of sliver and roving in the world, finishing at 1.3M tonnes, which was approx. 31% of total exports in 2016. Malaysia (401K tonnes) ranks second globally in sliver and roving exports with a 9% share, following Belgium (8%), France (5%), and Mexico (5%). Germany (186K tonnes), Czech Republic (175K tonnes), the Netherlands (156K tonnes), the UK (144K tonnes), Slovakia (143K tonnes), Russia (87K tonnes), and Spain (74K tonnes) took the minor share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to sliver and roving exports from China stood at +2.4%. At the same time, Malaysia (+16.4%), Russia (+8.6%), Mexico (+7.8%), the Netherlands (+2.7%), the UK (+2.6%), Slovakia (+1.2%), and France (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +16.4% from 2007-2016. Germany, Spain, Belgium, and Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2007 to 2016, the share of Mexico, China, and Malaysia decreased by -2.2%, -5.8%, and -6.8% percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($2.1B) remains the largest sliver and roving supplier in the world, making up 20% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($746M), with the share of 7% of global exports. It was followed by France, with the share of 5%.

In China, sliver and roving exports stood at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-0.6% per year) and France (-1.3% per year).

Sliver And Roving Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for sliver and roving amounted to $2,460 per tonne, lowering by -4.0% against the previous year. In general, sliver and roving export price continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, when export increased by 11% y-o-y. In that year, average sliver and roving export price reached its maximum level of $3,107 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average sliver and roving export price failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($4,002 per tonne), while Russia ($1,154 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of sliver and roving export prices was attained by China (+0.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
