Vegetable Price in the United States (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average vegetable import price amounted to $1,193 per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 8.1%. The import price peaked at $1,229 per ton in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($1,285 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($1,131 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Vegetable Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average vegetable export price amounted to $1,423 per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($1,590 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($762 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Vegetable Imports in the United States

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of vegetables decreased by -17.7% to 7.1M tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 7% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 8.6M tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, vegetable imports contracted remarkably to $8.5B in 2022. In general, imports showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 5.8% against the previous year.

Vegetable Exports in the United States

Vegetable exports from the United States dropped to 2.4M tons in 2022, waning by -7.9% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 7.2%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 2.6M tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, vegetable exports rose modestly to $3.5B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5.4% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
