The revenue of the potato market in the U.S. amounted to $X in 2017, growing by X% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The market value increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when it surged by X% y-o-y. In that year, the potato market reached its peak level of $X. From 2009 to 2017, the growth of the potato market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Potato Production in the USA

In 2017, potato production in the U.S. totaled X tonnes, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, potato production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern over the last decade, which was largely conditioned by a lack of any tangible expansion of the harvested area on the backdrop of the stable yield figures.

In 2017, average potato yield in the U.S. totaled X tonne per ha, remaining constant against the previous year. At the same time, potato harvested area in the U.S. amounted to X ha, which also approximately equated the figures of 2016. 

Potato Exports
Exports from the USA

In 2017, approx. X tonnes of potatoes were exported from the U.S.; increasing by X% against the previous year. In general, the total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2007 to 2017: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2017 figures, the potato exports increased by +X% against 2015 indices. In value terms, potato exports stood at $X (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. 

Exports by Country

Canada (X tonnes) was the main destination for potato exports from the U.S., with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (X tonnes), threefold. Taiwan, Chinese (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2017, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Canada amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+X% per year) and Taiwan, Chinese (+X% per year).

In value terms, Canada ($X) also remains the key foreign market for potato exports from the U.S., comprising X% of total potato exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Mexico ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan, Chinese, with a X% share.

Export Prices by Country

The average potato export price stood at $X per tonne in 2017, jumping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the potato export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Average export prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2017, the countries of destination with the highest prices were the Philippines ($X per tonne) and Malaysia ($X per tonne), while the average prices for exports to South Korea ($X per tonne) and Canada ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+X% per year), while the export prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Potato Imports
Imports into the USA

In 2017, approx. X tonnes of potatoes were imported into the U.S.; going up by X% against the previous year. In value terms, potato imports totaled $X (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. 

Imports by Country

In 2017, Canada (X tonnes) was the main supplier of potato to the U.S., accounting for an approx. X% share of total imports; in value terms, those supplies totaled $X. From 2007 to 2017, imports from Canada fluctuated noticeably, but finally, the volume of 2017 remained relatively unchanged against its outset figure.

Import Prices by Country

The average potato import price stood at $X per tonne in 2017, flattening at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by import prices for Canada.
