Potato Market Size in the U.S.

The U.S. potato market rose modestly to $X in 2020, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 when the market value increased by X% year-to-year. Potato consumption peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2019, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, potato exports dropped to $X in 2020. Overall, total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, exports increased by +X% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at $X in 2019, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Canada (X tonnes) was the main destination for potato exports from the U.S., accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (X tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Canada stood at +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+X% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for potato exported from the U.S. were Canada ($X), Mexico ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), together comprising X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and Honduras, which together accounted for a further X (+X% per year) saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average potato export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, with an increase of X% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, export price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2009 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Potato Imports

Imports into the U.S.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of potatoes increased by X% to X tonnes in 2020. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2020. Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2007 to 2020: its value decreased at an average annual rate of -X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2020 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Canada (X tonnes) was the main supplier of potato to the U.S., with a approx. X% share of total imports.
