Overall, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2007 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last fourteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +X% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Canada (X tonnes) was the main destination for potato exports from the United States, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (X tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Japan (X tonnes), with a X% share.
From 2007 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Canada amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+X% per year) and Japan (+X% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X), Mexico ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for potato exported from the United States worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese), the Dominican Republic, South Korea and Honduras lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X the main countries of destination, Honduras, with a CAGR of +X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average potato export price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 when the average export price increased by X%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2009 to 2021, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2007 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Dominican Republic (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Potato Imports
Imports into the U.S.
In 2021, approx. X tonnes of potatoes were imported into the United States; declining by -X% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, potato imports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2007 to 2021: its value decreased at an average annual rate of -X% over the last fourteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +X% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 with an increase of X%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
