Wheat is one of the most important staple crops in the world, providing a significant source of calories and nutrition. Several countries excel in wheat production, playing a crucial role in global food security. Here are some of the top wheat-producing countries:
China
China is the largest wheat producer in the world, with an annual production of around 131 million metric tons. The country has a vast agricultural sector and favorable weather conditions that make it ideal for wheat cultivation. Wheat is a staple food in China, and the government has implemented policies to promote its production and ensure self-sufficiency.
India
India comes in second in terms of wheat production, with an annual output of approximately 97 million metric tons. Wheat is grown across various states in India, with the northern region being the most significant contributor. The government has introduced initiatives to improve wheat cultivation techniques, such as the adoption of high-yielding varieties and the use of modern agricultural practices.
United States
The United States ranks third in global wheat production, producing around 55 million metric tons annually. Wheat is grown in several states, including Kansas, North Dakota, and Montana. The country's advanced agricultural technology and fertile soil contribute to its high wheat yields. The United States is also a major exporter of wheat, supplying wheat to both domestic and international markets.
Russia
Russia is a key player in the wheat market, with an annual production of approximately 72 million metric tons. The country's vast land area and favorable climate conditions support wheat cultivation. Russia has significantly increased its wheat exports in recent years, becoming one of the leading wheat suppliers to countries in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.
Canada
Canada is another major wheat producer, with an annual output of around 32 million metric tons. The country's vast expanses of arable land, particularly in the plains of Saskatchewan and Alberta, provide an ideal environment for wheat farming. Canada is known for producing high-quality wheat, which is in demand both domestically and internationally.
Australia
Australia is a significant wheat producer, with an annual production of approximately 30 million metric tons. Wheat farming is concentrated in the states of Western Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria. Despite facing challenges such as drought and variable weather conditions, Australia remains a major exporter of wheat to global markets.
These countries, along with others like France, Germany, and Argentina, contribute significantly to global wheat production, ensuring a stable supply of this essential crop to meet the world's growing food demands.

In 2022, wheat price growth is forecast to slow down with sufficient global production and falling demand for feed grains in the U.S. and the EU. Global wheat output is set to remain at the 2021’s level of approx. 777M tons.
The average annual wheat price in the U.S. is forecast to drop by 2% y-o-y to $250 per ton in 2022, falling on reduced domestic consumption coupled with stable supply worldwide. The market balance will be buoyed by production gains in Argentina and the EU that will offset decreasing output in Brazil and Paraguay.
This year, harvests in the EU, the U.S., the UK, Argentina, Morocco and Ukraine are expected to increase, leading to a growth in wheat production. Even though global stockpiles of grains will remain high, there are boosted expectations for inflation due to forecasts of record demand and increased prices for other cereal grains. The rising global population and bioethanol production are key factors leading to this growth in demand for wheat. Another driving factor is the emerging trend in the EU to use more wheat in animal feed rather than barley.
Global wheat production will reach 758.3 million tons in 2020, showing a slight decrease of 0.5 percent over the previous year's highs and still at a fairly high level.
Global wheat consumption amounted to X thousand tons in 2015, remaining constant against the previous year level.
In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of production were China (X thousand tons), India (X thousand tons), Russia (X thousand tons), together accounting for X% of total output.
