Which Country Produces the Most Wheat in the World?

In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of production were China (128,244 thousand tonnes), India (95,717 thousand tonnes), Russia (71,832 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 39% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of wheat production among the main producing countries was attained by Russia (+4.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global Wheat Production

Global wheat production amounted to 760,769 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +4.3% against the previous year level. Overall, the global wheat output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +13% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global wheat production attained its maximum volume of 760,769 thousand tonnes in 2012. From 2013 to 2015, the total wheat output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global wheat production was primarily driven by population growth and growth of food production. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the wheat output in the immediate term.

The world wheat harvested area amounted to 220,619 thousand ha in 2015, which was almost equal to the previous year figure. The wheat harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.2% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total wheat harvested area peaked in 2009, falling back in the following year. From 2010 to 2015, the total wheat harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
