Price for Paper and Paperboard, Excluding Newsprint in China (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average import price for paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint amounted to $712 per ton, with an increase of 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 27%. The import price peaked at $1,208 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($1,144 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($426 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (+11.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint stood at $1,298 per ton in 2022, falling by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 10%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,332 per ton, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($1,608 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($1,013 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Paper and Paperboard, Excluding Newsprint in China

In 2022, purchases abroad of paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint decreased by -22% to 8.5M tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 103%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 11M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint imports declined rapidly to $6.1B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 52%.

In 2022, shipments abroad of paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint was finally on the rise to reach 7.1M tons after two years of decline. In general, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint exports skyrocketed to $9.3B in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +60.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
