In December 2023, the average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $965 per ton, remaining stable against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 10% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,064 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($2,159 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($486 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Pakistan (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $417 per ton in 2022, surging by 33% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 132% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $475 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($480 per ton), while the price for India ($72 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, the amount of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds exported from China rose significantly to 2.9M tons, surging by 10% against the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 3.2M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds shrank to $2.4B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The smallest decline of -0.9% was in 2020.
