China Sees Leek Prices Drop to $672 per Ton

China Leek Export Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the leek price amounted to $672 per ton (FOB, China), with a decrease of -2.2% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 when the average export price increased by 24% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $1,473 per ton in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to April 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($1,397 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($262 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mongolia (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

China Leek Exports

In April 2023, leek exports from China rose markedly to 5.9K tons, with an increase of 13% on the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from April 2022 to April 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +8.4% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, exports increased by +76.7% against November 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 62% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in April 2023.

In value terms, leek exports rose markedly to $4M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. In general, total exports indicated a slight increase from April 2022 to April 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, exports increased by +10.6% against March 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 with an increase of 30% month-to-month.

China Leek Exports by Country

Japan (2.9K tons), Vietnam (1.8K tons) and South Korea (309 tons) were the main destinations of leek exports from China, together accounting for 86% of total exports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +69.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($2.1M), Vietnam ($1.1M) and South Korea ($147K) constituted the largest markets for leek exported from China worldwide, with a combined 83% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +60.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
